Chikomborero Foundation hosted a powerful and honest conversation on Healing from Anxiety and Depression, creating a safe space for individuals to explore both the emotional weight and the healing journey that follows.
The session began by acknowledging a reality many people silently experience, some days feel overwhelming and restless, while others feel empty and draining. Anxiety can leave individuals feeling constantly on edge, while depression can bring deep emotional and mental exhaustion. In some cases, people experience both at the same time.
The discussion emphasized that many individuals live in survival mode, which may appear as strength on the outside, but often hides silent suffering within. Participants were reminded that these experiences are valid and not a personal failure.
The session featured Egnes Moyo, a mother, fashion designer, and advocate against child marriage and gender-based violence. Drawing from her lived experiences, she shared a deeply personal journey of navigating anxiety, depression, and healing.
Key insights from the session included:
- Anxiety is more than stress; it can manifest as restlessness, tension, and an inability to relax
- Depression goes beyond sadness and often involves deep emotional and mental exhaustion
- The mind may suppress traumatic memories, but the emotional impact can still remain
- Healing does not begin with fixing yourself, but with understanding yourself
Practical steps toward healing were shared, including:
- Allowing yourself to feel emotions instead of avoiding them
- Creating simple, stabilizing routines
- Spending time outdoors and engaging in physical movement
- Taking care of the body through rest and healthy habits
- Journaling thoughts and emotions instead of internalizing them
The session reinforced that healing is a gradual process and that small, intentional steps can lead to meaningful change over time. Most importantly, participants were reminded that they are not alone, and that healing becomes more possible in supportive and understanding spaces.
