Chikomborero Foundation hosted a Mental Health Dialogue on Friendship, Support and Mental Health, providing participants with an opportunity to reflect on the powerful role that relationships play in emotional well-being. The session explored how healthy friendships can provide comfort during difficult times, encouragement during personal growth, and companionship that promotes resilience and hope.
Participants discussed the qualities of healthy and unhealthy friendships, the importance of trust, empathy, honesty, respect, and effective communication, and how supportive relationships can improve mental health. The conversation also highlighted how loneliness, toxic relationships, lack of support, and social isolation can negatively affect emotional well-being.
The dialogue encouraged participants to evaluate their own support systems, identify areas where they could strengthen their relationships, and consider how they can become more present, compassionate, and supportive friends. The session emphasized that while friends play an important role, they are not a replacement for professional mental health support when it is needed.
Key insights from the discussion included:
- Healthy friendships contribute positively to emotional and mental well-being.
- Strong support systems help people cope with stress, grief, and life's challenges.
- Good friendships are built on trust, respect, empathy, honesty, and healthy boundaries.
- Asking for help and accepting support are signs of strength.
- Being a supportive friend often begins with listening without judgment.
- Meaningful relationships promote resilience, healing, and personal growth.
The discussion encouraged participants to intentionally build positive relationships, nurture existing friendships, recognize unhealthy relationship patterns, and create communities where people feel seen, valued, supported, and connected.
